VSA Google Optimize alternative
Optimize is gone.
Testing is not.
Google discontinued Optimize on 30 September 2023. Anyone who worked with it knows the comfort of a free tool, and now knows what depending on a free product means.
The short answer
A successor has to do three things: deliver variations without a deployment, measure goals right through to revenue, and present a result you can defend. abdriven does exactly that, and runs on your server, so the next product shutdown does not hit you again.
| Criterion | abdriven | Google Optimize |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Actively developed | Discontinued on 30 Sept 2023 |
| Visual editor | Yes | Yes |
| Measure revenue | Revenue per visitor and order value | Through GA goals |
| Analysis | In the tool itself | In Google Analytics |
| Number of parallel tests | Up to unlimited, depending on plan | Was limited |
| Data stays in your own network | Yes | No |
| Cost | From €299 / month | Was free |

What to watch for when moving
- Redefine your goals: what was an event in GA becomes a goal with its own name here.
- Revenue needs its own event from the order confirmation, that used to come from GA.
- Export old results before nobody can find them, and file them as learnings.
- Plan the sample size before launch this time, instead of hoping afterwards.
What you will miss from Optimize
- The price. A free tool is not replaced by a paid one, that is the honest part.
- The direct connection to Google Analytics as the analysis surface.
FAQ
Questions about this comparison
Is there a free replacement?
None that measures revenue cleanly and is maintained for the long run. That is exactly what Optimize foundered on: a free product has no reason to stay.
Can I bring my old experiments across?
You rebuild the variations, usually faster than migrating them. The results from back then belong in the learnings library, so nobody tests the same idea twice.
